How Dust Impacts You More Than You Think

Everyone would love to live dust-free, but the reality is that there is no place that is 100% free of dust. While small amounts are rarely a big deal, dust can actually cause multiple health issues if left to build up. Because of this, it’s important to perform regular commercial cleaning.

We break down the impact dust can have on your life and how to effectively deal with it.

What Is Dust?

Believe it or not, dust isn’t just inorganic material, it can be organic as well. However, the collection of microscopic particles are most commonly made up of dead skin cells (gross, we know). Other common types of dust include:

  • Dirt
  • Dust mites
  • Mould spores
  • Fabric fibres
  • Paint particles
  • Bacteria
  • Pollen
  • Dead insects

… And many more nasty things.

Construction is also a common action that will stir up dust, sometimes dangerously so. This is due to the chemicals and heavy metals that can linger on surfaces and in the air caused by construction materials or demolition.

However, commercial construction cleaning can effectively deal with this kind of dust.

How Can Dust Affect Your Health if Not Regularly Removed by Commercial Cleaning?

Hopefully, you’re not too freaked out by dust at this point. The largest impact dust has is typically just allergies to dust itself. Sometimes people are born with this allergy, while others can develop it later in life. Whether you get allergic to it also depends on how much dust you’re around. If you’re constantly in dusty areas, it’s highly likely you’ll become allergic to dust.

Dust can also cause the following symptoms:

  • Sneezing
  • Congestion
  • Teary or itchy eyes
  • Coughing
  • Chest tightness
  • Shortness of breath
  • General itchy sensation

How Can You Reduce Dust in the Workplace?

While dust clearly can be problematic, it’s also easy to deal with cleaning up.

Here are some easy ways to reduce dust in the workplace:

  • Regular commercial cleaning
  • Checking if there is an alternate way to complete a task that won’t stir up dust and completing it that way
  • Installing the appropriate ventilation
  • Installing air purification filters or scrubbers

General regular cleaning will also do wonders, but there are some important tips to keep in mind. For example, don’t use a feather duster, they only spread dust from one place to another. Instead, use a vacuum for floor-to-ceiling dusting, or a microfiber cloth dampened with water to wipe down surfaces. Other alternatives include specialty microfiber or electrostatic dusters for those hard-to-reach locations.

While dust can cause health issues, regular commercial cleaning can help ensure your workplace stays as dust-free as possible.
